3D Imaging

DESI-MS is a powerful and sensitive method for 2D and also 3D imaging of lipids from direct and unmodified complex biological samples. The construction of a 3D molecular image using sequential coronal sections of a mouse brain has been performed. More detail is revealed by including ion images of different lipid species detected within the 36 2D mouse brain sections analyzed, resulting in 3D mouse brain models in which several anatomical structures, such as the lateral corpus callosum, can be identified. These models provide comprehensive information on the 3D molecular distribution of lipids within the brain, and correlation between these molecules and brain substructures.
