Analysis of Polar Lipids

Many of the molecules detected during direct analysis of tissue by normal DESI are the polar lipids that are the major constituents of cell membranes.  In addition to their important structural function, these molecules also play an active role in the bodies chemistry, for example as metabolic precursors or as signaling molecules.

The polar lipid profile from porcine brain in the negative ion mode (top) and the positive ion mode (bottom) are shown to the left.
