Human Brain Cancer Research
In collaboration with a team of researchers at Harvard Medical School, we have used DESI-MS imaging and statistical analysis to classify gliomas, the most common type of primary brain tumor. DESI imaging isused to investigate differences in lipid profiles of human glioma samples of different histologic types, grades and of varied tumor cell concentration. Our experiments using DESI imaging reveal a robust capacity to discriminate grey and white matter from glial tumors, and to discriminate between grades and subtypes of gliomas, therefore providing detailed diagnostic information. Classifiers for subtype, grade and concentration generated with lipidomic data showed high recognition capability. These studies prepare the way for future intraoperative examination and classification of brain tissue by MS.
