Distribution of Pharmaceuticals within Test Animals
One important application of mass spectrometry imaging is determining the distribution of pharmaceuticals in tissue. A rat was dosed with the psychoactive drug clozapine. Several different tissues were imaged by DESI, and the results for the brain are shown above. One advantage of using mass spectrometry rather than normal methods using radioactive labels is that the drug and its metabolites (in this case, N-desmethyl clozapine) can be distinguished.
