Drug Mapping

drug mapping

One important application of DESI-MS imaging is determining the distribution of pharmaceuticals in tissue. Animal models are widely used in drug development/research and there’s a need to study the distribution of a drug in different organs after its administration. For example, different tissues of a rat dosed with the psychoactive drug clozapine were imaged by DESI, and the results for the brain are shown above.  One advantage of using mass spectrometry rather than methods using radioactive labels is that the drug and its metabolites (in this case, N-desmethyl clozapine) can be distinguished.
