Instrumentation

  • Ion Trajectory Simulation program (ITSIM) is a generalized ion motion simulation program. Innovations in electrode design can be tested first by entering the details of the electrode geometry and watching how calculated mass spectra change.
  • Traditionally, mass spectrometers have been large, delicate lab-based instruments. Over the past 10 years, we have designed and constructed a series of ever smaller ion trap mass spectrometers in which RF fields are used to store and mass select ion ions. Our current state of the art in small ion trap mass spectrometers is represented by the Mini 10 and Mini 11, respectively.
  • The orbitrap is the first completely new type of mass analyzer in over 20 years. Check out the ion motion control experiments on our prototype orbitrap, their simulations, and some preliminary observations of space charge effects.
  • Ion soft-landing is the deposition of intact species on surfaces at low kinetic energies (0-100 eV). Our research includes understanding this phenomenon, design and construction of new mass spectrometry instruments to effect soft landing, and research into new applications
