Biotechnology Applications


DESI-MS imaging applications have been extended to the biotechnology field, especially in the area of reproductive biotechnology. For example, fetal development morphogenesis can be “chemically mapped”, showing metabolites and lipids present in diverse organs and tissues (Figure). Novel insights on animal ovarian physiology can be obtained by mapping small molecules in different stages of the reproductive cycle. Most impressively, it is possible to perform lipid analysis individually from oocytes and preimplantation embryos, which have microscopic dimensions (100-200 micron) and picograms of weight.
